Knife maker Peter Carey partnered up again with WE Knife Co., this time to release a full-size production model of his Nitro custom. The Nitro OG, as they’re calling it, brings out a version of the knife with its full dimensions after testing the waters with the Nitro Mini some time ago.
It was with that smaller version of the Nitro that Carey first hopped aboard the WE train in 2022; in the intervening time, he drew up the Gordo for the company’s Civivi brand; the Nitro OG marks the first time he’s with WE proper since the Mini. As the name implies, the Nitro OG matches Carey’s custom original in terms of dimensions, with a 3.75-inch drop point blade that looks ready to work – and, as usual, you’ve got your choice of blade finishes here. Seeing as this is a WE release, those finishes actually differ quite a bit: there’s a hand-rubbed satin finish, a full blackwash coated option, and finally a hybrid ‘satin flats, coated primary edge’ flavor.
So yes, cosmetics vary quite a bit (even more so when you take into account handle options; more below), but the blade steel’s consistent for all current Nitro OG offerings. It’s CPM-20CV, an M390 equivalent, a super steel with all the advantages of that designation: great edge retention, very high stain resistance, good toughness. The blade opens, as does the Nitro Mini, with either the flipper or the thumb stud (Carey’s custom versions usually sport one or the other).
Those who monitor WE’s output will expect to see several flavors of exotic carbon fiber on offer for the handle scales – and they will not be disappointed. In addition to the straightforward marbled option, there are copper and aluminum foil CFs, and a Nebula pattern Fat Carbon scale. This last is a vibrant smattering of colors – red, blue, white, black – and is paired with the all-black blade. All Nitro OGs have a sculpted titanium pocket clip, titanium frame lock, and titanium bolster; weight is listed at 5.03 oz.
The Nitro OG is slated for release next month.
