New stuff inbound from Kizer soon, including the Smolt, a rugged, high-performance fixed blade with a compact form factor.
There’s no arguing with the Smolt’s drop point blade shape: it’s just a pure, classic interpretation of the most ubiquitous, intuitive blade profile. Coming in at 2.93 inches, this is not an enormous knife, but it’s still a full-featured, multifunctional one. You’ve got the capacity to handle day-to-day stuff, of course, but lots of backup/campsite outdoors utility as well. The blade steel, 3V, is a semi-stainless that even today, years after its first appearance in the production knife scene, is a byword for toughness; combined with the fixed blade format, this means that, if you treat the Smolt like an EDC, it will be an EDC that can go above and beyond when it comes to hard work and high intensity chores.
The timeless blade shape flows into a timeless handle. The Smolt’s grip is as simple as they come: just a linear, rectangle shape with the edges rounded. You don’t have to take this one into hand to understand how it’s going to work, that it will let the user decide which grips are best and when. The scales are made from gray G-10 with a black coarse-grained Micarta inlays; these work in tandem with the black-coated blade to give the Smolt a clean, modern look.
This is the latest collaboration between Kizer and Jonathan Styles, a knife maker who may be best known, outside of these Kizer projects, for Newfoundland Knife Co., an online storefront that Styles’s own pieces alongside select models from other outdoors brands (like Hultafors, the ax company).
