A good flashlight is one of those tools you don’t fully appreciate until you need it. Between all my years working night shift as a police officer, my time camping, and simply using my lights for EDC and around the house, I’ve found that reliability matters. The moment the power goes out, you’re searching a dark basement, or something goes bump in the night, you quickly discover whether the flashlight in your hand was a good choice. That’s exactly where the Streamlight PolyTac 1X shines.
The Streamlight PolyTac 1X
Everyday Carry That Quickly Becomes Your Go-To Light
While testing the PolyTac 1X, I found myself reaching for it far more often than I expected. Like many people, I used it for all the little jobs that seem to pop up after dark.

Whether I was taking out the trash or checking to see if the neighborhood raccoons or deer had decided my bird and squirrel feeders were an all-you-can-eat buffet, the PolyTac 1X quickly became my go-to flashlight. Its compact size made it easy to slip into a pocket, yet it produced more than enough light to illuminate my entire backyard without carrying a much larger flashlight.
The same was true inside the house. My basement has plenty of shelves, storage bins, and dark corners that always seem to swallow whatever tool or part I’m looking for. The PolyTac 1X produced a bright, clean beam that made searching those areas much easier. Rather than dragging out a larger flashlight, I found myself grabbing the PolyTac simply because it was convenient and always close at hand.

Streamlight PolyTac 1X Specifications
The PolyTac 1X is built around a lightweight polymer body. It’s got an aggressive “rocky stipple” texture that provides a secure grip, even with wet or gloved hands. We get more rain in Pittsburgh than Seattle, and single-digit and lower temps are common in winter here. That stuff matters.
The light is 4.71 inches long and only weighs 2.93 ounces with the included battery. That makes it compact and light enough for everyday carry, but it still feels rugged enough for serious use.

A reversible pocket clip allows the light to ride comfortably in a pocket, attach to gear, or even clip to the brim of a hat when you need hands-free illumination. Streamlight also offers the PolyTac 1X in either black or a bright yellow finish.

Multi-Fuel Flexibility
What really sets the PolyTac 1X apart is Streamlight’s Multi-Fuel technology. The light can operate using the included SL-B9 lithium-ion USB rechargeable battery pack, a CR123A lithium battery, or even a standard AA battery. AA batteries are everywhere.

That flexibility is more valuable than it may sound at first. Rechargeable flashlights are great until the battery dies. Then you’re left waiting for it to recharge. I especially found that out in my first couple of months of working night shift. With the PolyTac 1X, you simply have options.
The included SL-B9 battery can be charged from a standard wall adapter, a portable power bank, or even a solar charging panel while camping. If charging isn’t possible, swapping in a CR123A or even a common AA battery keeps the light running.
Whether you’re dealing with an extended power outage, traveling, or spending time in the backcountry, you’re never dependent on a single power source. Being able to pick up replacement batteries at a convenience store or pull one from an emergency kit adds a level of confidence many rechargeable lights simply can’t offer.

Streamlight PolyTac 1X Performance
Performance is impressive for a flashlight this compact. On high, the PolyTac 1X produces 500 lumens with a beam reaching out to 268 meters. That’s 18,000 candela if you prefer measuring light that way. Runtime is equally respectable, delivering up to five hours on high and as much as fourteen hours on the 40-lumen low setting, depending on the battery being used.

Streamlight equips the PolyTac 1X with its TEN-TAP programmable tail switch. It’s handy since different users have different priorities. During my law enforcement career, I always wanted my duty light to activate on high every time. I could always drop down to a lower utility level light if I needed to, but generally, when I grabbed my light, I wanted all of the light, right now.
A friend of mine, who primarily uses flashlights for utility work, prefers his lights to default to low power. The PolyTac 1X allows users to configure the operating modes to match how they actually use the light.

An Excellent Choice for Emergency Preparedness
The PolyTac 1X’s battery flexibility also makes it an outstanding addition to an emergency preparedness kit. I requested my sample in the bright yellow finish with that in mind. Black tactical gear has its place, but a bright yellow flashlight is much easier to spot in a packed gear bag, glove compartment, or emergency tote.
During a power outage, the last thing you want is to spend valuable time digging through equipment trying to locate your flashlight. I’m a fan of bright colors on outdoor gear, and the yellow body practically jumps out at you. It’s also a lot easier to find if you happen to drop it outside, too. Just because it’s yellow doesn’t preclude you from using it as a shooting light if you need to.
The PolyTac 1X is a good choice for building a home emergency kit, outfitting a camper or RV, or packing for a camping trip. Its compact size means it takes up very little room, while the multiple battery options help ensure you’ll always have a way to keep it running when you need it most.

Go To Gear
I’ve carried Streamlight flashlights for more than forty years. They rode on my duty belt throughout my law enforcement career, accompanied me on camping trips long before that, and are the main lights I use for EDC and around the house. I’ve owned a lot of lights over the years, but my Streamlights have kept going.
I still have and use the ancient aluminum body 3D cell light that I first got back when I was in Scouts over 40 years ago. It’s a heck of a lot heavier and bulkier than the PolyTac 1X, and puts out way less light, but it still works. I can say with certainty that Streamlight builds dependable equipment.
The company is also based in my home state of Pennsylvania. Eagleville isn’t exactly next door, but I still like supporting a Pennsylvania company whenever I can.
The PolyTac 1X continues that tradition of dependable lights. It combines practical performance, rugged construction, and exceptional flexibility into a package that’s easy to carry every day. Whether you’re looking for a dependable everyday carry flashlight, a utility light for projects around the house, a companion for camping trips, or a reliable addition to your emergency preparedness kit, it’s well worth considering.
With an MSRP of $80 and typical street prices around $50, the PolyTac 1X is also a pretty darn good deal. Sometimes the best flashlight is simply the one that’s with you when you need it, and the PolyTac 1X is exactly that kind of light.
