You never know when the Buck of the Month will land, but the May 2024 model’s release date – the 4th – seems particularly auspicious. And this nefarious-looking, red and black version of the 112 Slim Pro TRX reminds us of someone, we just can’t quite put our finger on it…
Anyway, quick refresher course on the 112 Slim Pro TRX itself. This is a modernized version of the classic 112, little brother to the also classic 110 Folding Hunter. It takes the basic dimensions and concept of that knife, then brings it in line with modern EDC standards by slimming it down, swapping out the materials, adding one-hand deployment, and giving it a pocket clip. The resulting knife was similar but different, obviously part of the same family as its inspiration, but differentiated enough that both knives could exist as their own thing, neither replacing the other.
What’s different here? Well, there are some interesting changes. First of all, the blade steel is not S30V as on the standard Slim Pro TRX, but D2 instead – an interesting choice, but one that would not necessarily be considered an upgrade. Of course, D2 has earned its stripes as a performer over many years of service, and this particular piece of D2 comes with Paul Bos’s high performance heat treat; furthermore, the bright red Cerakote directly addresses the steel’s major weak point, which is its relative susceptibility to rust compared to full stainless steels.
The handle has been notably altered as well. Whereas the standard Slim Pro TRX sported G-10 scales, this BotM model comes with aluminum ones, black coated and embellished with fluting and channels that evoke the detailing on a certain infamous Sith lord’s outfit…a reversible black deep carry pocket clip is here too, just as it would be on the standard model. Combine that with the lockback mechanism and dual thumb studs and you’ve got a knife that’s 100% ambidextrous, so it should appeal to right- and left-handed collectors alike.
