When I say my wife is the best, it’s not just because she’s brilliant, sweet, and smoking hot. It’s also because she finds gear like the Portable Shooting Wall from Purposeful Armament and buys it for my birthday. I’m always looking for ways to improve my range and my training. I had been planning to build some USPSA-style shooting walls using construction fencing, but I hadn’t made much progress on the project.
The Portable Shooting Wall
I wanted portable walls that I could move and pack away with ease. They needed to be simple to take down and transport. I was struggling to find a way to do that while keeping them durable and user-friendly. It turns out a company called Purposeful Armament already had the solution. At 80 dollars, it’s also a little cheaper than buying wood. Have you seen lumber prices these days?

The Purposeful Armament Portable Shooting Wall is compact, lightweight, and easy to set up. It consists of three aluminum rods that press together and a section of black construction fencing. It takes about five minutes to assemble and five to take down. It packs away easily inside a small range bag and weighs practically nothing.

A set of stakes keeps it locked into the ground. The stakes are supposed to use set screws to secure the rods, but sadly, they didn’t seem to be included in my kit. I didn’t realize that until I was already assembling it, but a few spent shotgun shells offered the padding necessary to keep the wall standing and mostly straight. I’ll need to find the correct set screws to complete the setup, but that’s not a big deal. This was exactly what I needed.
Why the Portable Shooting Wall?
I wanted something that could act as notional cover—something I actually had to work around. I want to practice my ability to move behind cover, move around it, and properly “pie” a corner. That’s not exactly a difficult concept, but consistent practice makes you faster and more efficient at it.

Plus, it gets boring just standing and shooting at the range. Anything that makes my training more effective is welcome, and if it makes it a little more enjoyable, then it gets a big “hell yeah” from me. As someone who wants to shoot more matches, it makes sense to have the kind of obstacles you’d actually see at a match.
The Portable Shooting Wall provides a more dynamic range experience. Even if you don’t have a private range as I do, this wall is still handy. You can set it up in the backyard for dry fire practice without much effort.
Shooting and Moving
You can set the Portable Shooting Wall up at various angles to spice things up. You can also create foot-based boundaries to build dynamic environments and additional challenges; the limits are really up to your imagination.

I used the wall to hone my shotgun reloading drills. I start on one side, shoot two, and then have to reload before I reach the other side of the wall and peek out to fire. This gives me something more tangible than a simple time barrier, incorporates movement, and is just more fun.
A simple wall can make a big difference in the quality and enjoyment of your training. Purposeful Armament is a small company, but this is an innovative and instrumental piece of gear. It’s just a wall, but if you’re creative, it’s so much more than that.
