Sen. Bernie Sanders encouraged his supporters to back President Joe Biden’s reelection in November, in a direct-to-camera pitch Thursday.

But the Vermont independent’s appeal, which he laid out in an almost nine-minute video on X, which was formerly known as Twitter, focused more on former President Donald Trump than it did on Biden — a sign of progressive discontent with the incumbent’s policies.

“[There] are a number of areas where the administration’s response has been inadequate or, in the case of Gaza, dead wrong,” Sanders said. “But while we may have our disagreements with Biden, it’s important to take a minute to think about what a Trump presidency would mean to our country and, in fact, the world.”

He ticked through a list of Trump’s alleged faults and misdeeds, describing the former president as a “pathological liar, a “racist,” “sexist,” “xenophobe,” “homophobe” and a “religious bigot.”

“If you believe in democracy, and I know you all do, … let me be very clear: The next several months will be the most important in modern American history,” Sanders said.

Progressives, including Sanders, have voiced discontent with the Biden’s administration’s response to the war in Gaza as the Palestinian death toll continues to climb. Pro-Palestinian groups in several states have waged campaigns to vote against Biden in Democratic primaries across the country.

Sanders, who also remains insistent that Hamas must be destroyed, has called on Biden to enforce the Foreign Assistance Act, which says that the U.S. will not send aid to any country that blocks or restricts the flow of U.S. humanitarian assistance.
