PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA — A 31-year-old man named James Weldon was taken into custody on Friday for violating firearms laws and endangering the welfare of a child. These charges are in connection with the shooting incident involving his 3-year-old son in the Grays Ferry area of Philadelphia.
According to the U.S. Marshals Service, Weldon was arrested by the Philadelphia police and U.S. Marshals at approximately 11 a.m. on Friday. The arrest took place on the 1300 block of S. Dover Street.
It is worth noting that the child’s mother, Laylaah Muhammad, who is 23 years old, has also been implicated in the case and is facing charges. Muhammad was apprehended on Wednesday and is accused of various offenses, including criminal conspiracy, endangering the welfare of a child, unsworn falsifying, tampering with evidence, obstruction of justice, and making false reports.
Initially, Muhammad told law enforcement officials that she was walking on the 1500 block of South Taney Street in Philadelphia with her 3-year-old son when she heard gunshots. She claimed that she looked down and discovered her son had been shot in the cheek. Muhammad also alleged that she witnessed two individuals dressed in dark clothing fleeing the scene.
However, investigators later disclosed that they had reason to believe the shooting occurred at a property on Taney Street rather than on the sidewalk.
Philadelphia District Attorney Larry Krasner stated that Muhammad is expected to face multiple charges, including endangering the welfare of a child, conspiracy, and other offenses related to providing false information to law enforcement.
Although Muhammad is now in custody and has been charged, authorities have not yet released further details regarding the shooting or the potential suspects involved.
The 3-year-old boy who was shot in the face was transported to the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, where he is currently in stable condition.
