Authorities are investigating an officer-involved shooting Thursday night inside NewYork-Presbyterian Brooklyn Methodist Hospital in New York City that left a knife-wielding suspect dead.

NYPD Brooklyn South Commanding Officer Assistant Chief Charles Minch said police responded to multiple 911 calls around 5:27 p.m. for a violent man armed with a knife inside the hospital.

The man barricaded himself inside a room on the eighth floor with an elderly patient and a hospital security guard. He allegedly threatened to kill hospital staff, and had cut himself and attempted to cut others, Minch said during a news conference after the incident.

“This incident demonstrates the incredibly dangerous situation that our officers encounter every single day,” Minch said, noting that the information about the incident remained preliminary.

When the man “advanced toward officers with the weapon in his hand,” officers discharged their firearms, striking him, Minch said. The man was pronounced dead a short time later.
