Civivi just revealed a fresh variant of their evergreen Elementum model; no surprise there. What is surprising is just what form this latest version takes: it melds the Elementum form with a traditional, replaceable blade utility knife. Meet the Civivi Elementum Utility.
A smash hit for Civivi and their most instantly-recognizable model, the Elementum’s success lead to quite the corral of sequels and spin-offs. It’s been sized up, shrunk down, turned into a tanto, formed into a fixed blade – it even jumped from the budget-oriented Civivi catalog into the premium We Knife lineup. And on top of all of this, there are the special editions, with different scales, steels, and aesthetic options to take into account as well: Christmas Elementums, Halloween Elementums……in other words, this is a model with a huge family tree.
That being said the Elementum Utility still stands out amidst the crowd. You can tell at a glance what is different between this and the original pattern: no more drop point blade, replaced with a frame into which standard utility razors can be slotted and screwed into place. That classic utility blade profile excels at opening and breaking down boxes, but can flex into lots of other general cutting jobs too; and, being replaceable, you don’t have to worry about dinging or otherwise damaging the edge in gnarlier chores.
The aluminum handle where you can see the Elementum heritage most clearly. It has the classic curvy shape, with a nice forward finger guard and no unnecessary protrusions, cuts, grooves, or the like. Civivi built in a button lock on this model, and when it comes to opening the knife there is both a flipper and a thumb stud built into the blade frame, which makes this one of the few Elementum model with a thumb stud deployment option.
According to Civivi, the Elementum Utility will be available next month.
