SILENCER SATURDAY #281: Let It Flow Through You – HUXWRX FLOW 762 Ti

Good afternoon everyone and welcome back to TFB’s Silencer Saturday brought to you by Yankee Hill Machine, manufacturers of the new YHM Turbo T3 5.56 rifle suppressor. We paused the series last week in observance of Memorial Day and to honor those who have given the ultimate sacrifice for freedom. This week we return with a look at a highly anticipated suppressor – the HUXWRX FLOW 762 Ti. Can it match the performance of its smaller and heavier steel sibling the FLOW 556K? Let’s take a look.

SILENCER SATURDAY #281: Let It Flow Through You - HUXWRX FLOW 762 Ti

I absolutely love the FLOW 762 Ti silencer. But before I tell you all of the things that make it great, I’m going to touch on some company history and the one area that I think could use some improvement.

Nearly 15 years ago, HUXWRX, then known as OSS suppressors, was the first modern silencer company to introduce low back pressure (flow-through*) technology to mitigate the pressure impact of adding a suppressor on to a rifle system. The idea is fairly simple, but the initial execution was overly complex. The first OSS models were two or three part systems that required specific muzzle devices and barrel parameters. To many shooters, myself included, the multi-section OSS suppressor was a heavy, long, and complex setup that was the target of both skepticism and criticism. One version of the Back Pressure Regulator (BPR) models weighed in at 2.4 pounds or 38.4 ounces.

*It should be noted that ‘flow-through’ is a registered trademark of HUXWRX.

Check out one of the early product descriptions:

OSS 7.62 OTB suppressors are a 2 component system featuring: – Back Pressure Regulator (BPR) – Signature Reduction Module (SRM) – Carbine models include the BPR1-12 BPR1-13 BPR1-14 BPR1-15 BPR1-16. – Bolt Action models include BPR1-42-B BPR1-43-B BPR1-44-B BPR1-45-B BPR1-46-B. – SRM models include the SRM-3 SRM-4 SRM-5 SRM-6 and SRM-6-MG. – 7.62 OTB suppression systems are customized for a range of 7.62 platforms including Remington 700 7.62 AR AR-10 FN FAL SCAR-17 M-14 and other variants. All of the BPR1 series models in this caliber set will accommodate the majority of platforms as mentioned. The BPR1 systems in this caliber set will fit over any barrel .750 or smaller. If your barrel is thicker than .750 navigate to our 7.62 Bolt Action suppressors to find models that can accommodate thicker barrels designed for lower rates of fire.

Honestly, there are full on weapons systems that are less complex than the OSS BPR requirements. But at it’s core (see what I did there) the OSS/HUXWRX mission was pure – reduce the internal pressure so that the overall effect of adding a suppressor to the rifle was almost non-existent.

As we sit here in mid 2023, it’s easy to criticize ideas from the past. As a reminder, it has barely been 20 years since the evaluation of “at-the-ear” metering was mentioned as an important evaluation category. Rifle suppressors were originally tested for decibel reduction by placing the transducer (microphone) 1.6m from the ground and 1m to left of the muzzle as specified by MILSTD-1474. For decades, the military application of suppressors was evaluated as an ability to obscure the location of an operator from the enemy (muzzle signature). It wasn’t until recently that the use of suppressors was important to the protection of the operators hearing. And because the use of suppressors by civilian shooters as grown tremendously in the last three decades, the military suppressor evaluation techniques were quickly becoming inadequate.

All of this is a long way to say that while the original OSS models were complex and heavy, the goal was was innovation – reduce the back pressure inside the suppressor to send gases and noise forward instead of into the action and back at the shooter, while at the same time increasing weapon system reliability.

OSS/HUXWRX went through a series of transitions, reorganizations, and product redesigns that eventually led to the HELIX lineup. A return to a more traditional muzzle attachment system eliminated the much of complexity concerns, shed some much needed weight, but still focused on the flow-through design and principles at the core of the HUXWRX mission. And the market responded positively.

If you know anything about engineering and manufacturing, you understand the difficulties of bringing an innovative design from models to a production-ready sample. Which is especially true when dealing with geometries that live inside a tube less than two inches in diameter.

Additive manufacturing enters the room…

With laser sintering additive manufacturing, commonly referred to as 3D printing, a high-energy laser is used to fuse powdered metal in thousands of successive layers to build a complete suppressor. The technique can fully realize designs that are too complex for traditional machining. Which is a perfect fit for the HUXWRX flow-through configuration that is atypical of traditional baffle or mono-core suppressors. I won’t bring up the old ‘don’t get baffled’ tagline from the OSS days. Well, I guess I just did.

In contrast to the HUXWRX FLOW 556K release last year that is constructed with stainless steel, the HXWRX FLOW 762 Ti is made with grade 5 titanium. The result is a suppressor that is 1.2 inches longer and 0.2 inches wider but weighs about the same at nearly 12 ounces.

The one objection I have about the FLOW 762 Ti  also applies to the FLOW 556K – the mounting system. It isn’t even that unique to HUXWRX because most manufacturers gave the same issue. The muzzle devices, one of which tops out at 3.7 ounces, are more than one quarter of the overall weight of the entire suppressor. Which, in my opinion, defeats the purpose of building lightweight suppressor systems.

The second critique about the attachment system is the proprietary thread pitch. Owners are limited to the muzzle devices made by HUXWRX, which is part of the overall design because both the brake and flash hider are built specifically to interact with the geometry of the flow-through technology. One recommendation would be to create a minimalist muzzle device design that would reduce weight while working with the existing mount system. The alternative would be to transition the FLOW line to a universal mounting system with 1.375×24″ threads that would allow for direct thread inserts and other manufacturer’s mounts. We’ll see how this mount situation all works out as 2023 progresses.

One positive about the mounts is that larger caliber mounts are not compatible with smaller caliber suppressors but smaller caliber mounts are compatible with larger caliber suppressors. This allows for cross compatibility without the risk of catastrophe.

Let’s take a look at the numbers.

The SOCOM stress test is a no-BS evaluation technique for hard-use suppressors and I am please to see a titanium model complete six full rounds. If you are worried about picking up the FLOW 762 Ti on durability concerns alone, your mind should now be at ease.

And speaking of concerns, many potential customers of additive manufacturing suppressors worry about repairing damage in the unlikely event of a baffle strike. HUXWRX has mentioned recently that repairing the FLOW line is possible, a deviation from other manufacturer’s stances on the topic. Great news.

Going With The Flow

On paper, the HUXWRX FLOW 762 Ti is the perfect suppressor. It is lightweight, not too long, and durable. But how does it perform out on the range?

First up was some subsonic Sub-X 190gr 300BLK in the SIG MCX SPEAR-LT with a 9” barrel. Probably my favorite round in every category except for price, subsonic 300BLK is a bellwether testing moment for 7.62 rifle suppressors. The FLOW 762 Ti performed very well on the MCX with the gas setting set on ‘+’. True to its flow-through form, the MCX/FLOW combo would not fully cycle on the ‘-‘ gas setting that is reserved for suppressors that add back pressure to the system. The sound was great, and could actually be better than perceived since the heavy foliage has returned to the range and the report could be bouncing back at me. Still, the performance was impressive.

Next up is one of the pinnacle hunting/self defense rounds for 300BLK guns – the Barnes VOR-TX 110gr TAC-TX FB. If you use your 300BLK rifle for hunting or defense, this is a proven performer. I shot a few rounds without ear protection and was surprised at the the noise reduction level. While I can’t recommend shooting any centerfire supersonic round without hearing protection, I found each shot to be comfortable. Which is rare for me.

SILENCER SATURDAY #281: Let It Flow Through You - HUXWRX FLOW 762 Ti

And today’s final testing was done with Hornady .308 Win 168gr BT Match. I shot a few rounds with only my right ear protection in place and was reminded that supersonic 300BLK is not the same as supersonic 7.62×52. Especially when it is shot out of 13” barrel. The result was definitely loud, but in comparison to an unsuppressed short-barreled .308 carbine, the results were more than adequate.

We are going to see this setup a lot more – I have every Hornady .308 Win load in house and will be conducting accuracy and velocity testing using the MCX-SPEAR and HUXWRX FLOW 762Ti.

This is one of those times when I feel that, even thought the price tag is high, the end perfomance is worth the investment. The HUXWRX FLOW 762 Ti is that rare case of the complete rifle suppressor package. If you can live with the mounting system weight and lack of compatibility, there is nothing holding me back from recommending this silencer. Besides being quiet and light, the HUXWRX flow-through tech does not have an effect on gas/piston systems.

It seems like every few months I find a new favorite suppressor. Welcome to the latest winner.
