HOT GAT or FUDD CRAP? Look Mom a FAMAS or I’m at a Loss?

Welcome everyone to the 239th edition of ‘Hot Gat or Fudd Crap?’, one of our many series here on TFB. If you’re new to the series, this is where we look at the most obscure firearms that are actually for sale and ask the question – is this Gat a sweet deal or only have Fudd appeal?  Each week the TFB staff weighs in with their thoughts, but readers get the final say in the poll at the bottom of each article.

In our last edition, our poll showed that you, the readers, decided the Remington 700 chambered in .458 SOCOM was a hot gat.

At this time the original auction remains up with the wildcat chambered bolt action gat still up for grabs. We can only hope it’ll make its way to a new home in the not-so-distant future.

In this week’s edition of HGFC, we look at a very rare pre-ban FAMAS chambered in .223/5.56. As is tradition, this foreign bullpup gat is currently up for sale on GunBroker for $75,000 Starting Bid with No Reserve.

Let’s see what the Staff had to say about this week’s offering:

“For the true believer in Gun Jesus. Hot Gat” -Giorgio O.

“That carry handle has its own zip code, and that grip is so fat that NRA RSO’s are in orbit around it. Hot gat because this fudd doesn’t understand the appeal.” – Adam Scepaniak, Fudd

“Financial insanity but I don’t care – still a smoking hot gat. Pairs beautifully with your yacht and vintage Ferrari.” -Will P.

“Ca fusil est tres chaud!” -Doug E.

Hot Gat or Fudd Crap

Manufactured since 1978 by the French company MAS the FAMAS is one of those holy grail-type rifles. I mean that in the sense that it might be bad, good, or otherwise, but you’d never know because no one has one. I’ve had the privilege of shooting a lot of obscure, rare, and otherwise cool firearms and I’ve never encountered a FAMAS.  It’s one of those guns that fell right in the middle of multiple weapons and import bans and I’m sure there’s really only a select few people that can buy them.

So is there anything really cool about it? Well not really considering it’s a .223 (all my research indicates it’s not up to 5.56 NATO spec) and it’s a simple blowback design. The idea of a blowback bullpup being worth anything close to this amount is absolutely insane.  But hey, it’s a FAMAS and you don’t have one so you’ll never know just how good or bad it just might be.

So what do you think?  Is this French bullpup worth it with an opening bid of $75k or are you better off staying away from anything French today? As always I leave it up to you, the readers, to decide.
